We learnt how to count to ten in Cook Islands Māori. We discussed the ways in which the numbers are similar and different to the numbers in Te Reo Māori. Some are exactly the same while others have some little differences.
We did some art inspired by Cook Island tivaevae quilt patterns. We looked at some examples of these beautiful quilts and noticed that they are usually made with bright colours and patterns of plants and flowers.
Tivaevae are stitched by hand, many have over a thousand stitches! They are made with love and given as gifts.
Noah noticed that the examples we looked at used fractions of quarters to create their patterns. We folded our paper in quarters to make our patterns. Here is a look our art inspired by Cook Island tivaevae:
